So what is a Kouign Amann? It's a much celebrated Breton pastry that many in the Anglophone world would refer to as "heart attack on a plate." We're talking 40% pastry dough, 30% butter, and 30% sugar—a gut bomb lurking inside a caramelized crust as it waits to attack your waste line!
In Breton language, the name literally means 'butter cake' (kouign=cake and amann=butter), ​and it is said to have been devised by a certain Yves-Rene Scordia, a baker, in Douarnenez around 1860.

The New York Times once called the kouign amann “the fattiest pastry in all of the world." It's pronounced kween a-mon.' This tee is a great conversation starter (though not recommended for those who don't want puzzled people staring at their chests!)
